Softball Shortstop; Basketball Point Guard (1985-1988)
Yvette Buentello-Giron excelled as a two-sport athlete at St. Mary's. As a point guard for the basketball team, she earned All-American Honorable Mention for her senior season. She led the team in scoring and assists during her senior year, averaging 15.1 points and 6.8 assists per game. She set the school's all-time record for career assists wi th 423. Over the course of her career, she averaged 12.7 points per game and was named All-Conference, All -District and team MVP.
As a softball player, she guided the tea m to the NAJA National Championship as shortstop. She slugged seven homers and led the team in runs scored (40) in 1986. The next season she scored 38 runs. In 1988, she led the team in runs scored (36), hits (43), assists (106) and slugging percentage (.565).
Following her career as an athlete, Buentell-Giron returned to St. Mary's as a coach, serving at various times as head volleyball coach, assistant basketball coach, interim head basketball coach, and graduate assistant for softball. She also has coached d uri ng the summertime Buddy Meyer basketball camps. She continues to partici pate in St. Mary's alumni softball games.
