Winners of their final 12 games and the NAIA National Championship, the 1988-1989 Men’s Basketball team finished 28-5 overall and 9-1 in Heart of Texas Conference play. Anthony Houston was named an All-American after 19.1 points and 4.5 assists per game. Ronald Thomas (16.2) and Zach Lawson (11.2) also averaged double figures in scoring, while Lawson led the team with 7.2 rebounds a contest. Head Coach Buddy Meyer was named the National Coach of the Year after the team defeated East Central, 61-58 in the Championship game. On Jan. 22, 1989, the Rattlers won a double-overtime game at Texas Lutheran, 125-118, establishing a single-game record for scoring that still stands today and avenging a loss from earlier in the year at Alumni Gym — the lone conference loss of the year for the Gold and Blue.
