First Base/Right Field (1976-1980)
As an All-City standout in high school, Clay was drafted by the Atlanta Braves. He opted to seek his education at St. Mary's instead of playing professional baseball. During his four
years at St. Mary’s, the team won three Big State Conference Championships, and Stolte established himself as one of the greatest hitters in school history.
He was a two-time All-Big State Conference selection and an All-NAIA District IV Team selection throughout his career. Stolte was also named Team Tri-Captain and Co-MVP his senior year and twice won the Brother Eugene Gittinger Award for most team RBIs. He was also a star off the field as an Academic All-American.
In 1980, he hit three homers and drove in 10 runs in a single game against Hardin-Simmons. He finished his senior season with a .376 average and set long-standing team records in home runs (14) and runs batted in (64). Stolte graduated magna cum laude with a degree in personnel management.
