The 2001 Baseball Team became the first Rattler team to win a national championship after the move to NCAA Division II, finishing with a 50-13 record. Head Coach Charlie Migl was named National Coach of the Year by the ABCA, while Jesse Gutierrez was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Championship, the Heartland Conference Player of the Year and an ABCA All-American.

Oracio "O.J." Garza was honored as the MVP of the South Central Regional and a Second-Team All-American, and Joseph Contreras, Brandon Rosznosky, Fernando Tadefa and Clayton Wentworth joined them on the Heartland All-Conference team. St. Mary's had three streaks of seven or more wins and went 5-1 at the National Tournament, defeating Central Missouri 11-3 in the Championship game, avengins an 11-10 loss to the Mules from two days prior.
