Named the National Pitcher of the Year in 2012 after posting a perfect 14-0 record, Carl O’Neal’s name is still scattered all over the record books at St. Mary’s. He was 39-6 on the hill with nine career shutouts and helped lead the Rattlers to the 2012 College World Series. In addition to his presence on the mound, O’Neal was also a standout in the classroom, earning back-to-back CoSIDA Academic All-Region honors and Academic All-American in 2013. O’Neal was named to the Heartland Conference Hall of Fame in 2018, as well as to the 20th Anniversary Team. His 55 starts are a school record, while his 2.46 ERA and .209 opposing batting average both rank fourth all-time. O’Neal threw 18 complete games in his four seasons with the Rattlers, only coming out of the bullpen three times.
Currently:
O’Neal remained in San Antonio upon graduation and works for a general contractor doing commercial construction. Two of the notable projects he worked on are the SSFCU Corporate Campus and the Thompson Hotel.
Quote:
“My experience at St. Mary’s was the most rewarding time of my life. Between the professors and baseball coaching staff, it is hard to credit one over the other. The education and life skills I received at St. Mary’s were invaluable in the success of my career. St. Mary’s is also where I met my wife, so it will forever hold a place in my heart.”
