Pitcher/First Baseman (2002-2004)
An argument could be made that Kymberly (Kling) Cavazos belongs on the Mount Rushmore of St. Mary’s Athletics. A three-time All-American, Cavazos pitched St. Mary’s to the 2003 NCAA D-II national championship, dominating in such striking fashion that earned her the 2002 Honda Broderick D-II Athlete of the Year award and a spot as a Top 25 Athletes of the Decade in D-II. Cavazos, who played at St. Mary’s from 2002-2004, totaled two regional championships as a Rattler, posting an 88-12 record in the circle to go along with four no-hitters, 506 strikeouts, 29 shutouts and a career ERA of 1.11 over a three-year span that saw her rack up three consecutive Heartland Conference Player of the Year awards. But to speak of Cavazos’ excellence in the circle is to tell only part of her story — the San Antonio native was just as dominant with the bat in her hand. While Cavazos tied for the NCAA lead with 35 victories in 2002, she also led the nation in hits (92), doubles (24) and RBI (69). For her career, she batted .407 with 159 RBI and 60 doubles, and was part of 154 Rattler victories. Longtime St. Mary’s softball coach Donna Fields cited Cavazos’ competitiveness and desire to study the game as two key attributes that made her who she was.
