Point Guard/Shooting Guard (1994-1998)
C. Tyrell Whisenton was, and still is, the King of 3’s at St. Mary’s. Fourteen years after playing his final game as a Rattler, Whisenton remains the school’s all-time 3-point leader, having drained 176 3’s over four seasons. A member of the 1,000-point club, Whisenton twice led the Rattlers in scoring, doing so as a sophomore in 1995-96 and again as a junior in 1996-97. He averaged 10.1 points and 1.4 assists per game, while hitting an average of nearly two 3-pointers per game.
Whisenton also ranks among the Rattlers’ most prolific free-throw shooters, connecting at an 82.3 percent clip over his career and tallying 88 career steals.
A two-time NAIA All-American and a three-time All-Heart of Texas Conference selection, Whisenton guided the Rattlers to the conference title during the 1995-96 season
.
Even after leaving St. Mary’s, Whisenton remained close to the school, especially throughout having one of his restaurants serve as a sponsor for the St. Mary’s men’s basketball and golf teams for many years.
