Contreras leads StMU in final day of SEU Invite

AUSTIN, Texas — After a tournament packed with cancellations and unpleasant weather, the Rattlers' Women's Golf team was able to conclude the St. Edward's Invitational, climbing from their ninth place standing yesterday to finish the competition in seventh led by freshman Kelly Contreras.

The Rattlers improved their first round total by three strokes to jump wo placing positions. The University of Indianapolis of won the competition seven strokes better than West Texas A&M which boasted the individual champion Glory Jangthongsiri, who shot a final round score of 69.

Conditions seemed to be more bearable as the Rattlers entered the prolonged second day of action.

Contreras (Fr., San Antonio) carded the lowest round for StMU for the second straight day with her 77. She ended the tournament in sixth place.

Allison Howarth (R-So., San Antonio) was not far off Contreras' path, turning in a day-two 79 to end her tournament in a tie for 21st.

Bailey Furgeson (Sr., Newcastle, California) finished in a tie for 38th place as she shot an 86 on the day.

The last two Rattlers to make up the team total were Haley Keller (Jr., Pflugerville, Texas) and Paola Diaz-Portela (Fr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) who tied for 56th place in the competition after shooting an 89 and 91, respectively.

On the individual side of things, Daryn Peterman (Sr., Comfort, Texas) carded a 96 to end in 59th for the competition.

The Rattlers will now gear up as they travel west to the Cal State-East Bay Invitational at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo, Calif. beginning Monday, March 2.
