ROCKWALL, Texas — The No. 16 St. Mary's University Women's Golf team advances to Medal Match play at the Lone Star Conference Championship after finishing fourth during stroke play on Tuesday at the Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club.
It is the second straight year the Rattlers have advanced to medal match play at the conference tournament after finishing second in both rounds a year ago. It also marks the eighth straight tournament that the Rattlers have finished in the top five.
The Rattlers climbed one spot on the leaderboard over the final 18 holes, saving their best round for last after firing a 293, which tied for the lowest team round of the day and leapfrogged StMU over Midwestern State into one of the coveted top four spots. St. Mary's totaled 886 strokes for the tournament after shooting rounds of 294, 299 and 293 (+22).
"I'm really proud of how this team closes tournaments," said Director of Golf
Connor McCarthy. "Since we made match play, it's anyone's tournament. I'm excited to see our team compete tomorrow."
Junior
Taylor Wilczek (Anthem, Ariz.) earned All-Tournament honors after finishing fourth with a three-under-par total of 213. Wilczek shot a 73 in the opening round and then posted back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish four shots off the lead. This is the second-straight season Wilczek has finished in the top-20 at the Lone Star Conference Championship, as she tied for 18th a year ago. Wilczek led the field in par-5 scoring, finishing seven-under on the long holes, and she was one of only four players with an eagle in the 54 holes, and she posted two.
Brooke Yount from UT Dallas won the individual title, firing a tournament low 66 on the final 18 holes to win with a tally of 209 (75-68-66). DBU won the team title and will square off with St. Mary's on Wednesday in the first round of medal match play. The Patriots finished 12-over, defeating UT Tyler by one stroke.
Freshman
Manon Verret (Toulouse, France) had one of the best tournaments of her young career, climbing three spots on Tuesday to tie for 13th place with 224 strokes (71-78-75/+8). Her total is a career low on a par-72 course, taking one shot of her previous low of 225 from both the MSU and Rattler Invitationals. Her overall low is 220 from the par-71 Emerald Coast Collegiate. Verret also tied for the tournament lead in par-3 scoring, matching runner-up Martha Laremark (UT Tyler) at one-under.
Sophomore
Sophia Perkins (Sydney, Australia) was the biggest mover for the Rattlers, jumping 11 spots into a tie for 20th place after turning in an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Perkins finished at 226 (77-77-72/+10), her second-lowest par-72 tournament of the year behind her 223 from two weeks ago in Boca Raton.
Sophomore
Sabree Lefebvre (Riverview, Fla.) was extremely consistent through the tournament, carding rounds of 76, 75 and 76 for a total of 227 and 25th place, while fellow sophomore
Brielle Burns (Houston) finished in a tie for 28th place after posting a three-round total of 229 (74-77-78).
