Men's Golf Wins Third Tournament of the Spring

KERRVILLE, Texas — It wasn't ever a question of if the St. Mary's University Men's Golf team would win once the Battle at Riverhill started, but by how many strokes, and the Rattlers dominated in the last two rounds, winning by 33 strokes.
 
The Rattlers won their third tournament of the spring, shooting an 837, tied for the third-lowest 54-hole tournament total in school history. StMU started with a 283 in the first round and shot back-to-back rounds of 277 (-11) to finish 27-under-par and win the 14-team tournament. Midland and Odessa, the top two-ranked junior colleges in the nation, finished tied for second with 870 strokes, while Lone Star Conference foe Cameron placed fourth, one stroke back of the JUCO's.
 
For the second straight tournament, freshman transfer Guillaume Paquette (La Minerve, Quebec) led the Rattlers, winning the first tournament of his collegiate career. Paquette totaled 205 strokes (71-66-68), tying for the lowest round in the tournament at 66. He won individual medalist honors by three strokes over teammate Kongpop Kaikaew (Rayong, Thailand).
 
Kaikaew also was under par in all three rounds, tallying a 208 (70-69-69) for his fourth top-10 finish this season.
 
Junior Baptiste Touchard (Saint-Agathon, France) and sophomore Philip Hallstrom (Gävle, Sweden) tied for eighth place after carding 54-holes at 215 strokes. Touchard shot a 69 on Tuesday to move up in the standings (74-72-69), while Hallstrom came in at 71 in the final round (71-73-71).
 
Freshman Elijah Galvan (Austin) rounded out the 'A' team, tying for 15th place with 218 strokes (71-70-77).
 
Senior Oscar Sandberg (Enkoping, Sweden) made the most movement on the 'B' team, dropping 14 strokes between rounds two and three to end with a 231 (77-84-70) and tie for 52nd place. Sophomore Justin Hammett (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia) totaled a 237, while freshman Zach Seader (Bulverde, Texas) was two shots behind Hammett and senior Jose Maria Gallegos (Ahome, Mexico) shot a 246.
 
The Rattlers head to the Lone Star Conference Championship, April 14-16 at the Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club. This is the first time the course will host the championship since the Rattlers joined the league.
