Women's Golf Finishes Third in Record-Filled Tournament

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — The St. Mary's University Women's Golf team took a song from the Broadway classic Annie Get Your Gun, playing a bit of "Anything You Can Do" at the Ladies National Preview at the Boulder City Golf Club this week.

In the 1946 song written by Irving Berlin, Frank and Annie argue about who can do things better than the other, and while the Rattlers' women's golf team wasn't arguing about anything except maybe who enjoyed the course more, they were certainly posting low scores throughout the three rounds.

The latest to put her name in the StMU record books is sophomore Taylor Wilczek (Anthem, Ariz.), who turned in a career-low 66 on Tuesday and tied for the third-lowest round in school history. Wilczek shoots her 66 one day after sophomore Savannah Dupre (Boerne, Texas) tied the St. Mary's record with a 65 in round two, and senior Libby Kilbride (Sheffield, England) posted a 67 in the first round to tie for then-fourth on the record list.

Dupre ended the tournament in fifth place with a three-round total of 206 (71-65-70), bettering the school's 54-hole record of 210 done three times previously. Kilbride placed 10th at the tournament and her 209 (67-73-69) now ranks second on the top-10 chart. Wilczek ended the amazing two days with a 210 (75-69-66) to finish tied for 11th at the tournament and third in school history.

Senior Madalyn Trevino (San Antonio) tied for 31st place after turning in a three-round total of 219 (71-74-74). It is the lowest 54-hole tournament of her career, shaving eight strokes off her previous low of 227 from last year's Rattler Invitational. The 71 from the first round also ties her lowest individual round, and the senior finished tied for third in the tournament, averaging 2.83 strokes per hole on par-3s.

Junior Orla O'Leary (Galashiels, Scotland) climbed six spots on the leaderboard on the final day to be the team's biggest mover, shooting a 73 in the final round. She birdied the final two holes to tie for 38th overall at 221 (72-76-73).

Not surprisingly, the 840 (281-281-278) for the team smashes the previous 54-hole record of 870 by the 2021 team at the Lone Star Conference Championship. The 278 on Tuesday is the second-lowest, while the 281's tie for third-lowest. The St. Mary's record for low round is 276 at the 2022 LSC Tournament.

Ninth-ranked Cal State San Marcos edged out top-ranked DBU for the tournament title by one stroke, totaling 830 (279-270-281). The Patriots carded an 831 (285-271-275), while the Rattlers were third at -24. #23 Midwestern State was fourth, 11 strokes behind StMU, while #13 UT Tyler, which had individual medalist Arnie Taguines (-16) placed fifth at -11.

The Rattlers will wrap up the fall season against several of these same opponents at the MSU Women's Fall Invitational on Oct. 21-22 at the Wichita Falls Country Club.
