Softball Opens Home Season With South Central Region Crossover

First Pitch

•    St. Mary's opens the home portion of the 2023 season with the South Central Region Crossover, hosting MSU Denver on Thursday and Regis on Friday.

•    Senior pitcher Catalina Cavazos was named the NFCA National Pitcher of the Week after starting 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA and a no-hitter against preseason #8 Central Oklahoma on Sunday. She is the seventh Rattler to earn National Player of the Week Honors.

•    The Rattlers are 5-0 for the sixth time in school history and for the first time since 2015. That team won the first 10 games of the season and advanced to the College World Series.

•    St. Mary's is one of 21 undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division II play and one of two in the Lone Star Conference (West Texas A&M).

•    After pitching only 2.0 innings as a true freshman, sophomore Madeline Bloom has already earned two saves in 2023 to tie for second in the nation. Bloom has thrown 3.0 innings without giving up a hit and she has three strikeouts.

•    The Rattlers are a combined 22-5 against the two opponents from the RMAC and went 3-1 against the two teams last season in Colorado.

•    The Lone Star Conference schedule has shifted to three-game series for the 2023 season, creating a 42-game league slate. Conference play opens on Feb. 17 for the Rattlers when they host Eastern New Mexico.

•    StMU is already 1/3 of the way to last season's triple total of six as they have two in the first five games. Both Mackenzie Dugi and Reba Reyes each have one three-bagger.

•    The Rattlers return the entire pitching staff from the 2022 team that went 38-19, including All-Region selection Catalina Cavazos who was 20-5 with 16 complete games and 127 strikeouts. Jadyn Abrego and Savannah Youngblood added nine wins each as true freshmen, while Sara Robertson and Madeline Bloom combined for 14 appearances and one save.

•    Not only did head coach Donna Fields win the 1,000th game of her career in 2022, but she led the program to its 1,500th victory in the same game - a 4-3 win over Eastern New Mexico on March 25.
