RICHARDSON, Texas – The Lone Star Conference announced on Thursday the winners of the annual Scholar-Athlete Award winners and St. Mary's seniors
Deni Cresto and
Ashley Penshorn were amongst the 29 victors.

To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and be a member of the graduating class.

Besides representing 15 of the league's member institutions, this year's recipients represent 16 of the 18 sports that are sponsored by the conference. Baseball, men's tennis, men's track and field, volleyball, women's basketball, and women's golf had the most Scholar-Athletes with three each, while men's golf and women's track and field had two selections. Football, men's basketball, men's soccer, men's cross country, softball, women's soccer, and women's tennis each had one.

Cresto is a senior men's soccer player who has chosen to return to the team for his extra year granted by the NCAA for the pandemic. The exercise and sport science major hailing from Curitiba, Parana, Brazil is a two-time Lone Star All-Academic selection and was third on the team with 12 points in 2021.

Penshorn, a senior women's tennis player from Montgomery, Texas has also chosen to return to the Rattlers next season. She was named the ITA Senior of the Year in the South Central Region after ending the season ranked third in the region with an 18-6 record in duals, including an 8-1 mark in Lone Star Conference play. She had three wins over nationally ranked players and added an 18-7 record in doubles play.
