SAN ANTONIO – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its 2020 All-Academic Teams and Scholar-Athletes with St. Mary's Women's and Men's Tennis teams being recognized. This marks the ninth consecutive season both programs have received the team honor.
Everyone did a great job this year off the court," said St. Mary's Director of Tennis, Bill Macom. "Not only did the team have a GPA over 3.0, but a majority were in the 3.5 to 4.0 range. That is not an easy accomplishment considering the amount of community service time they all managed to perform. Some players even worked a part time job or interned as well. I'm definitely proud of their accomplishments and as a coach, it's nice to have a team with strong time management skills so that I can focus most of my attention on their playing skills."
In order for teams to be recognized by the ITA, the program must maintain a minimum cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 during the academic year.
Women's Tennis received seven scholar-athlete selections while Men's Tennis landed six.
Abigail Csengery,
Charli Delmonico,
Maria Garcia,
Gabi Ioannou,
Ashley Penshorn,
Alice Thane, and
Marina Vigil were award recipients for Women's Tennis.
Csengery earned her third ITA All-Academic selection while Penshorn and Thane earned their second career honor.
Alex Gee,
Daniel Gill,
Leon Hein,
Marc Maciel,
Bojan Popovic, and
Jeremiah Sanchez earned the award for Men's Tennis.
Sanchez received the honor for the fourth time in his career while Gee picked up his second honor.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
In the history of St. Mary's Women's Tennis, 71 players have received ITA Scholar-Athlete honors while Men's Tennis has earned 56 honors all-time.
