Women’s Golf takes seventh-place at West Regional

AMARILLO, Texas – Throughout difficult weather conditions, consistency was the theme for the Rattlers in the NCAA D2 Women's West Regional which ended on Wednesday. The Rattlers finished all three rounds in seventh place.
 
The par-71, 6436-yard tournament was held at the Amarillo Country Club. The playing field boasted 12 teams, including seven top-25 teams and 66 golfers. Play was suspended on Day Two due to inclement weather conditions.
 
The Blue and Gold shot 922 over the course of three rounds (316-304-302), and finished 36 strokes behind first-place finisher Dallas Baptist University.
 
Maria Regina Gonzalez led the Rattlers in the final day of the tournament, finishing in 18th place, and carding a tournament best one-under par 70 in the third round. Gonzalez finished Round Three over six strokes ahead of the tournament average score for that round, which was 76.47. The senior finished the regional with seven birdies, and improved 12 places on the individual leaderboard. Gonzalez finished the tournament at 13-over 226 for an average score of 75.33; her regular-season average was 73.44. The San Miguel, Mexico native landed 12 strokes behind first-place finisher and conference golfer of the year, Ann Parmerter of Dallas Baptist University.
 
Sofia Ruescas came in two strokes behind Gonzalez, ending the tournament at 15-over 228. The second round was her best, at three-over 74. The sophomore finished tied for 21st place on the individual leaderboard, and finished posting five birdies. This season, Ruescas averaged 74.60 a round. In the regional tournament she averaged 76.
 
Senior Paige Weiss and Junior Haleigh Jordan tied for 35th place with two other golfers: Claire Hogle of Cal State San Marcos and Sabrina Virtusio of Sonoma State. All four finished 21-over 234. Jordan started the tournament leading for the Rattlers at four-over 75 in Round One, and tied for ninth positioning on the leaderboard. The junior also recorded six birdies throughout the competition. Megan Sells rounded things out for the Rattlers, finishing at 44-over 257.
 
St. Mary's capped off its season with eight top-five finishes, including a first -place finish at the El Cheapo Classic held in March in El Pueblo, Colorado. The Rattlers averaged 303 collectively over the course of 25 rounds throughout the season.
