Women’s Golf produces top-five finish in final regular-season tournament

TUCSON – St. Mary's posted a final-round score of 614 to finish fifth in the West Texas A&M Desert Invite on Tuesday at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon.

The No. 14-ranked Rattlers entered the final round in seventh place, and were able to move up two spots after improving 18 strokes on the 5,978-yard course. The team's final score of 614 was 14 strokes behind tournament co-winners, No. 5-ranked Cal State San Marcos and No. 12-ranked Grand Valley State. Of the 17 teams in attendance, St. Mary's had the second-best score in Round Two, carding 10-over 298, just one stroke behind Grand Valley's 297.With rounds of 316 (+28) and 298 (+10), St. Mary's finished just three strokes behind fourth place West Texas A&M (611). Lynn finished in third (604) to round out the top-five.
 
Sofia Ruescas led the way for the Rattlers after carding a two-over 146 to tie for a third-place finish with Grand Valley's Katie Chipman. In a field of 86 competitors, Ruescas had the second-best finish of Day 2, carding two-under 70, finishing only behind first-place tournament finisher Helen Kreuzer of Lynn. Kreuzer carded six-under 138 to finish seven strokes ahead of second-place finisher, Claire Hogle of Cal State San Marcos (145).

Senior Maria Regina Gonzalez improved 12 positions on the individual leaderboard, ultimately landing herself tied for 20th place with five other tournament contenders. Gonzalez carded 10-over 154 over the course of two, with the second round being her best at three-over 75.
 
Haleigh Jordan improved her stroke by six in the second round, carding four-over 76. This allowed her to advance 17 places on the individual leaderboard, and ultimately left her tied for 39th place with three other golfers.
 
The Rattlers finished in the top five in eight of 10 regular-season tournaments. St. Mary's will now prepare for the postseason, beginning with the Heartland Conference Championship which will be held on April 13-16 in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. The Rattlers finished second-of-nine in the conference championship in 2018.
