Women's Golf battles through frigid conditions for 5th-place finish

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Golf closed out the abbreviated St. Mary's Rattler Invitational on Tuesday with a fifth-place finish at the Dominion Country Club.

Maria Regina Gonzalez led the squad by placing fourth individually after shooting 3-over 75 for the tournament, while fellow Rattler Sofia Ruescas earned a top-20 finish (tied 16^th) at 78 strokes.

The tournament, originally slated for 54 holes, was reduced to a single-round, 18-hole event over Monday and Tuesday due to frigid temperatures that swept through the area early this week. Tuesday's temperatures started in the low-to-mid 30s as play begin at 11 a.m., and rose to the low 40s by the time play concluded around 1:15 p.m.

Battling through the tough conditions, Indianapolis' Pilar Echeverria shot a blistering 2-under 70 to win the individual title. DBU, ranked No. 1 in the nation, took the team title at 304 strokes, two strokes better than No. 3 Indianapolis.

The Rattlers, ranked 12^th nationally, finished the tournament at 312 strokes.

The 15-tournament field featured nine squads ranked in the top 36 of the nation, including four top-10 programs. St. Mary's finished two strokes ahead of No. 5 Arkansas Tech.

Paige Weiss closed out the tournament at 79, tying for 25^th place. Haleigh Jordan shot 80 (tied for 30^th), while Megan Sells shot 83 (tied for 55^th).

The Rattlers will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday, when they travel to San Marcos, California for the Cal State San Marcos Tournament.
