Weiss captures Golfer of the Week after dual victories at El Cheapo Classic

SAN ANTONIO – Paige Weiss captured her third Heartland Conference Golfer of the Week award after leading the St. Mary's Women's Golf team to victory at the El Cheapo Classic, the league announced on Wednesday.

Weiss took first place individually after a strong finish in the second round at the Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colorado on Monday. The Huntsville, Texas native shot one-under-par 71 in Round 2 to improve two positions on the leaderboard. This was her best performance of the season. The junior also tied her personal best round score of 70 in Round 1. She ended the classic carding three-under 141. Weiss finished one stroke ahead of teammate Maria Regina Gonzalez, who improved her stroke by two over the course of two rounds, carding two-under 142 (72-70).

Led by Weiss, the Rattlers maintained first place on the team leaderboard throughout Round 2. This is the first team title win of the season for Women's Golf. StMU competed in a field of 16 teams and 80 players; six of the said teams are ranked top 50 in NCAA Division II standings. The Blue and Gold carded five-over-par 581 collectively, followed by West Texas A&M (592) and St. Edward's (596).

Sofia Ruescas finished in seventh-place, carding two-over 146 (73-73). Haleigh Jordan improved her stroke by two, posting three-over-par 75 in Round 2. She finished carding eight-over 152. Megan Sells improved her stroke by four in Round 2, finishing 18-over 162.

The Rattlers will resume competition on April 8 and 9 at the WT Desert Invite.
