Historic 5th place finish caps Rattlers’ magical season

FINDLAY, Ohio — The final round of the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championship ended with St. Mary's Women's Golf ending its spectacular season with an historic fifth place finish.
 
After shooting a final round 20-over-par, the Rattlers secured the best finish at the National Tournament in the program's history.
 
Spearheading the charge was Kelly Contreras who carded a final round 5-over-par 77, placing her tied for 17th on the individual leaderboard. This is the second best individual finish at nationals for a Rattler behind Jillian Wyne, who finished tied for 10th in 2002.
 
Maria Regina Gonzalez would finish the tournament two strokes back of Contreras as she carded a 314 for the week, placing her tied for 22nd.
 
Senior Allison Howarth saved her best round for last, firing a team best final round 4-over 76 capping a stellar career that includes a conference championship and regional appearances in each of her three years with the Gold and Blue.
 
Like Howarth, Mackenzie Thayer and Paige Weiss posted their best scores of the tournament on the final day. Weiss shot a 5-over 77 while Thayer was one stroke back of her on the day with a 6-over 77.
 
This year's Rattlers collected five team titles this year, matching the second most in a single season in the program's history while also finishing in the top-5 in all but one of the 13 tournaments played this season.
