Rattlers finish 2nd at Heartland Championships

Contreras, Weiss, Gonzalez, Kearney earn conference honors

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas — St. Mary's Women's Golf continues its magical season with a second place finish at the 2017 Heartland Conference Championship Tournament.
 
"As always we came here this week to pick up another 'W' so obviously we're disappointed we didn't achieve that goal," head coach Thomas Kearney said. "But, we have a lot of positives to gain from this week."
 
The finish marks the seventh straight top-2 finish for the Rattlers since the start of the calendar year.
 
Leading the charge was All-Tournament selection Kelly Contreras, who posted her best round of the tournament with a 1-over par 73. Contreras would finish tied for fifth with a 221 for the weekend.
 
All-Conference selection Paige Weiss finished with the best final round score of any Rattler, posting a 1-under par 71 as she ended the tournament carding a 7-over par 223.
 
After firing a final round 74, Allison Howarth finished tied for 10th while teammates Maria Regina Gonzalez and Mackenzie Thayer each posted a 75 on the final day with Gonzalez finishing tied for 12th and Thayer three spots back, tied for 15th.
 
It would later be announced that Gonzalez would join Weiss as an All-Conference selection while first year head coach Kearney would be named Heartland Conference Coach of the Year.
 
He and his Rattlers have their eyes on more in the coming weeks.
 
"Now, we have a week and a half to get prepped for the NCAA Regional Championship," Kearney said.
 
The Rattlers will travel to Wichita Falls, Texas for the NCAA West Super Regional Championship beginning on May 6.
