Women's Golf closes out regular season with 5th tournament win

FORT SMITH, Arkansas — St. Mary's Women's Golf walked away with its fifth team tournament victory of the season and fourth individual title of the year at the UAFS Hardscrabble Invitational.

The Rattlers added to the 22-stroke lead they held entering Tuesday's final round of play, running away with the team title by 27 strokes over second-place finisher Rogers State.

Howarth, a redshirt senior from San Antonio, soared from third place to first to claim the third tournament victory of her career with a two-over 72 in the final round of play at the Hardscrabble Country Club.

Four Rattlers finished in the top five, as Paige Weiss finished third, Maria Regina Gonzalez fourth and Kelly Contreras tied for fifth.

"I'm extremely proud of the fight we had all week," head coach Thomas Kearney said. "We were not at our best by any means, but we come away with some more positives and another 'W.'"

The action marked the second time the Rattlers double-dipped as tournament and individual champions this year, having also done so at the Rattler Invitational earlier this semester.

Weiss shot 70-78-74—222 for third place, earning her fourth top-five finish over the past six events. Gonzalez was two strokes behind at 224, securing her fifth straight finish in the top four.

Contreras shot 71-74-80—225 for the week, tying for fifth. It marked marked her best finish since tying for second at the West Texas A&M Invitational in the fall.

Mackenzie Thayer rounded out the lineup with a 21st-place finish (240).

"We'll have a day off tomorrow and get back to work again ready for the conference tournament," Kearney said, "and then on to the NCAA championships."

The Rattlers will next hit the links at the Heartland Championships, set to run Sunday, April 23 through Tuesday, April 25 at the Slick Rock Golf Club in Horseshoe Bay, Texas.
