Late surge gives Women's Golf 4th-place finish at WNMU Invite

GOODYEAR, Arizona — A strong final round at the Western New Mexico University Fall Invite helped St. Mary's Women's Golf move up to finish in fourth place following Tuesday's second and final round.

Maria Regina Gonzalez led the way, tying for third place after shooting a final-round 70 at the Golf Club of Estrella, while Kelly Contreras shot a 72 on Tuesday to tie for 13^th.

Tarleton State took the team title after shooting 584, while Regis' Mary Weinstein finished No. 1 on the individual leaderboard with a two-round total of 141 — three strokes better than Gonzalez's 144.

St. Mary's final-round 287 tied for the best single round posted by any team, equaling tournament-champion Tarleton State's final-round score. The scorching-hot finish helped the Rattlers climb all the way from 12^th place following the first round.

Shaving 12 strokes off her first-round tally, Allison Howarth shot a 71 Tuesday for the second-best score turned in by any Rattler. Howarth tied with teammate Paige Weiss, who shot a 74 in the final round, for 36^th place. Ana Bonilla shot back-to-back 82's in the tournament.

St. Mary's will return to action Oct. 3, when the Rattlers will travel to Amarillo, Texas for the WTAMU Lady Buff Stampede.
