Contreras, Howarth lead Rattlers to victory

SAN ANTONIO — It was a wire-to-wire victory for the St. Mary's Rattlers as the Rattler Invitational concluded on a bright Tuesday afternoon at The Dominion Country Club.
 
After starting the day up by 13 strokes, the Rattlers finished the tournament with a 604, placing them 18 strokes ahead of second place Tarleton State.
 
Leading the way was individual champion Kelly Contreras, whose three-over par 75 set the tone for the Snakes as she fired a 144 for the tournament. Contreras' final round ended with an eagle on the 18th hole.
 
"I was between two clubs," Contreras said of her final shot. "I was leaning towards my nine-iron, but (Massoletti) said 'you really need to hit pitching wedge'."
 
"So I set up, swung away," Contreras added. "It actually was a little right, but it got a friendly kick off the fringe."
 
A strong second round from Allison Howarth placed her 3rd on the leaderboard as she carded a 151 with a second round 77.
 
"It's never easy losing to Kelly," Howarth said jokingly. "But it was good putting two decent rounds of golf together.
 
Freshman Maria Regina Gonzalez placed tied for 5th following her final round 76 while Paige Weiss tallied a 156 as she ended the tournament tied for 11th.
 
"The freshman stepped big as usual," Howarth said. "We had a lot of fun."
 
Next week, the Rattlers will travel to Austin, Texas for the St. Edward's Women's Golf Spring Invitational.
