Contreras, Gonzalez power Women's Golf to 2nd-place finish

Duo finishes in a tie for 2nd place on individual leaderboard

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Staving off some stiff competition, St. Mary's Women's Golf teammates Kelly Contreras and Maria Regina Gonzalez powered the Rattlers to a second-place finish at the WNMU Fall Intercollegiate.
 
And the duo tied for second place individually in the process.
 
Gonzalez (Fr., San Miguel, Mexico) fired a 68 in Tuesday's final round, while Contreras (So., San Antonio) carded a 70 to tie for second place at 138. They swapped opening-round scores, where Contreras shot 68 and Gonzalez 70 in Monday's first round.
 
Twenty teams and 104 individuals competed in the tournament.
 
The Rattlers shot 570 as a team, three strokes back of champion California Baptist. Western Washington (574), CSU-Chico State (582) and Colorado Mesa (583) rounded out the Top 5.
 
Redlands' Caroline Ordian took first place on the individual side, finishing two strokes ahead of the Rattler duo at 136. She entered Tuesday's final round with a four-stroke lead after shooting a blistering 64 in the opening round.
 
St. Mary's Allison Howarth roared back with an impressive Day 2, shooting 71 to tie for 22nd place at 147. Haley Keller followed a first-round 74 with a 76 in the final round to finish in a tie for 38th place at 150. Paige Weiss finished one stroke back at 151, tying for 41st.
