Howarth, Contreras pace StMU to 5th place in final round

SILVER CITY, N.M. — St. Mary's Women's Golf entered the final round of the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate in first place Tuesday and finished in a tie for an impressive fifth place in a stacked, 16-team tournament with two strong Rattler performances.
 
Allison Howarth (RS-So., San Antonio) continued her chase for her first career individual title in the final round Tuesday, but her impressive one under par final score held her tied at second place with a stroke count of 143, tying her best career finish.
 
Howarth was on the heels of CSU-Pueblo's Leina Kim, who pulled away in the final round as she shot five under par to claim the individual title with a final stroke count of 133.
 
Freshman Kelly Contreras (San Antonio) stunned in the tournament's final round, shooting even par to jump from tied for 16th place to a Top 5 finish. Contreras marked her best career finish in her second collegiate tournament, tying for fifth place after carding three birdies in her final eight holes Tuesday.
 
Claiming the tournament title was Cal Baptist with a final stroke count of 587 followed by Point Loma, Colorado Mesa and Western Washington.
 
St. Mary's shared fifth place with Somona State as both squads finish with a final team stroke count of 603.
 
Haley Keller (Jr., Pflugerville, Texas) finished with a final stroke count of 154 to tie for 35th place followed by freshman Paola Diaz-Portela (San Juan, Puerto Rico) finished seven strokes behind to tie for 57th place.
 
The Rattlers tee off in their third tournament of the fall season starting Mon., Oct. 6 at the West Texas A&M Invitational in Amarillo, Texas.
