ABILENE, Texas —
Joe Hermsen was the man again for the Rattlers as he smacked the game-winning run in Game Two of the Rattlers' doubleheader with McMurry Thursday to help seal two more Rattler wins.
No. 3 St. Mary's took both games of the doubleheader against the War Hawks, winning 5-2 and 1-0 to improve to 16-4 on the season and 4-1 in Heartland Conference play.
Drake Roberts (Jr., Brenham, Texas) broke open a scoreless Game Two in the Rattlers' last at-bat, smacking a leadoff single to move ahead 90 feet after a sac bunt from
Brooks Orton (Jr., Cedar City, Utah).
Hermsen then came through in the clutch once more, as just the game before Hermsen hit the walk-off in the series finale with William Jewel College, pelting an RBI-single to score Roberts for the Rattlers' fourth straight win.
Game One saw five Rattler runs off five hits, spurred by
Al Gonzalez (RS-So., Pasedena, Texas) who recorded two RBI-doubles for the game.
The doubleheader sweep saw aces
Rene Solis (Sr., San Antonio) and
Matt McClain (Jr., San Antonio) both toss complete games with Solis pitching a seven-inning win with six strikeouts while McClain pitched a nine-inning shutout in Game Two, fanning eight.
Solis' win in Game One improved his record to 4-1 on the season while McClain, who currently leads the nation in strikeouts, improved to 5-1.
The Rattlers complete the series with McMurry (5-10, 3-4 in conference) Friday with a single game at 1 p.m. in Abilene, Texas.
