NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Combining to shoot a 295 in the third and final round, the No. 15 St. Mary's University Women's Golf team climbed four places into fourth at the Texas State Invitational at the Landa Park Municipal Golf Course.
The 295 ties for the team's second-lowest round of the season behind the 282 from the second round in the MSU Fall Invitational. The field consisted of 15 teams, 12 of which were Division I schools. The Rattlers defeated the other two Lone Star squads by at least 24 strokes to dominate the Division II section.
The four Rattlers who figured in the team scoring on Tuesday all moved up at least five places on the leaderboard, including sophomore
Sophia Perkins, who was the big mover, climbing 21 spots with her final round of 71 (-1). Perkins ended the tournament tied for 29th place with a three-round total of 227 (77-79-71/+11).
Sophomore
Sabree Lefebvre (Riverview, Fla.), competing as an individual, finished in eighth place after turning in an even-par 72 in the third round. She wrapped up the tournament with a career-low 215 (73-70-72/-1), taking 11 strokes off her previous low of 226 from last season's conference tournament.
Taylor Wilczek (Surprise, Ariz.) matched her second round with an even-par 72 on Tuesday to lead the Rattlers with a 222 (78-72-72/+6), finishing tied for 15th. The junior, who is ranked 45th among Division II golfers according to Scoreboard, moved up 10 spots over the final 18 holes.
Sophomore
Brielle Burns (Houston) was extremely consistent, firing a 76 in all three rounds to end tied for 31st place with a 228 (+12), while freshman
Manon Verret (Toulouse, France) matched her with a 76 on the final 18 to tie for 46th place (75-82-86=233/+17). Freshman
Abbey Anderson (Austin, Texas) struggled in the final round, shooting an 85 to finish tied for 50th place (72-77-85=234/+18).
Host Texas State won the tournament on its home course, shooting an 846 (294-276-276/-18) and was the only team to finish under par. Tarleton State was second (+9) and had the individual champion in Louise Depadt (70-64-71=205/-11), while Houston Christian finished third.
