SAN ANTONIO — High winds equaled higher scores on Tuesday at the annual Rattler Invitational. The St. Mary's University Women's Golf team finished in second place behind No. 2 DBU at the Dominion Country Club.
The Rattlers finished 25 over par with a three-round score of 889 (296-290-303), while the Patriots won with 866 strokes (278-299-289), and had the individual medalist in Ella Cheek, who ended 14 under par (65-70-67=202).
Junior
Taylor Wilczek (Anthem, Ariz.) was the only other golfer to finish under par in the trying conditions. Wilczek posted a 54-hole total of 214 (67-74-73) for second place. It is the best finish of her StMU career and is four strokes off her best total of 210 from the Ladies National Preview in Oct. 2024.
Both freshman
Manon Verret (Toulouse, France) and sophomore
Brielle Burns (Houston) tied for ninth place, shooting 225 (+9). Verret finished round two with a career-low round of 70 and carded a 78 over the third round to tie her career-low tournament total of 225. It is also the first time she has placed inside the top 10 at a tournament. Burns posted an even par round of 72 in the second round and shot a 74 in the final round.
Sophomore
Sabree Lefebvre (Riverview, Fla.) finished in 14th place with 227 strokes. She wrapped up round two with a 74 and finished the tournament shooting a 78. Sophomore
Sophia Perkins (Sydney, Australia) had a rough day in the wind, posting a round of 89 to finish tied for 66th (77-76-89/242).
Competing as an individual, freshman
Abbey Anderson (Austin, Texas) finished tied for 20th place after carding an 85 in the final round. She shot even in the second round for the lowest round of her collegiate career and ended the week with 230 strokes (73-72-85).
Sophomore
Gladys Taboada (Puebla, Mexico) also played the links as an individual, finishing in a tie for 32nd place after totaling 233 strokes (75-79-79).
St. Mary's will head to the Emerald Coast Collegiate on March 8-10 in Destin, Fla. The tournament is at the Sandestin – Baytowne Golf Club and will consist of 18 holes each day for three days.
