Women’s Golf Repeats as Desert Invite Champions

TUCSON, Ariz. — The No. 9 St. Mary's University Women's Golf team won its third tournament of the spring season, winning the WT Desert Invite for the second straight year.
 
The Rattlers began Tuesday in second place but shot a 314 for the lowest round of the day to take over the lead and win the tournament by nine strokes over host West Texas A&M and Cal State San Marcos. StMU took one stroke off its first round for a two-day total of 629 (315-314).
 
St. Mary's ends the regular season with three titles, two second-place finishes, three third-place nods, and one fifth-place finish in its eight regular-season tournaments. The team has three weeks off from competition to prepare for the Lone Star Conference Championship at the Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club on April 21-23.
 
Sophomore Savannah Dupre (Boerne, Texas) ended in a three-way tie for second place after posting rounds of 75 and 78 (153, +9), as no player in the field shot a below-par round. Dupre, who entered the week ranked 19th in the nation, tied with #20 Gam Songprasert from West Texas A&M and #52 Kiara Hernandez from CSUSM. Sonoma State's Avery Foster, ranked No. 32, won the individual title, one stroke ahead of the trio at 152 (76-76).
 
Senior Libby Kilbride (Sheffield, England) made the most movement in the second round, climbing from 23rd to 10th after shooting a 77 on Tuesday. It is Kilbride's fifth time this season to end in the top 10, one off Dupre's total of six.
 
Sophomore Taylor Wilczek (Anthem, Ariz.) ended in a tie for 16th place with a total of 159 (79-80), while senior Orla O'Leary (Galashiels, Scotland) finished in a six-way tie for 20th with a 160 (81-79) and sophomore Sabree Lefebvre (Riverview, Fla.) tied for 32nd place after posting a total of 164 strokes (84-80).
 
Dupre finished the tournament as the leader in birdies with seven and was second in the field with an average of 4.20 on the par-4s. She was one stroke behind WT's Sarah Reed, the younger sister of former Rattler standout Rebecca Reed. Kilbride also shot even par on the par-5s for one of the top averages in the 101-player field.
