LAREDO, Texas — It took a 37th hole, but St. Mary's University Women's Golfer
Orla O'Leary won the first tournament of her career, winning the title at the Jack Brown Memorial Invitational on Tuesday, helping the Rattlers win the team trophy.
Â
O'Leary, a junior from Galashiels, Scotland, entered the day two shots off the lead and fired a 77 on day two to tie Texas A&M International's Kiara Montebon after 36 holes. The pair competed in a playoff hole on the 18th at the Laredo Country Club, where O'Leary had a fantastic drive off the tee and two-putted for par to win by one stroke.
Â
Despite having a rough second day, the Rattlers hung on for a three-stroke victory in the six-team field. The win is the 33rd team tournament title in school history and the first this season, though the Rattlers have finished in the top three in all five tournaments.
Â
Sophomore
Savannah Dupre (Boerne, Texas) improved by one stroke on day two, shooting a 79 to move up to a tie for 11th place, alongside senior
Libby Kilbride (Sheffield, England) as both carded 159. Sophomore
Taylor Wilczek (Anthem, Ariz.) was one stroke behind the pair at 160 (76-84), while sophomore
Sabree Lefebvre (Riverview, Fla.) turned in a 162 (82-80) competing as an individual to place 17th.
Â
Freshman
Gladys Taboada matched her Monday round, totaling 82 strokes to finish tied for 22nd with a 164 in the first tournament of her collegiate career.
Â
The Rattlers have two weeks before competing in The Southern Invite, hosted by Central Oklahoma at the Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, Texas. StMU then hosts the Rattler Invitational on Feb. 24-25 at the Dominion Country Club.
