WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Despite five of the six golfers moving up or remaining steady on the leaderboard on the final day, the St. Mary's University Women's Golf team dropped one place into third after Odessa College shot a blistering -1 on Tuesday to sneak past the Rattlers into second at the MSU Fall Invitational.
Top-ranked DBU won the tournament by six strokes over the Wranglers, while the Rattlers were third with 882 strokes (303-282-297/+18), 10 off the Patriots' total. All five golfers in the team competition finished inside the top-25 for the Gold and Blue in their final fall tournament of the season.
Junior
Taylor Wilczek (Surprise, Ariz.) tied for fifth, turning in a three-round total of 214 on the par-72 course (72-66-76/-2). Wilczek finished four-under par on par-4 scoring, leading the entire field with her 3.87 average. Her fifth-place finish is the best of her StMU career, while her 66 from round two ties her career-low round. It is the first time as a Rattler that Wilczek has placed in the top-10, though it's the 10th time in 14 tournaments she's finished in the top-25.
The sophomore trio of
Brielle Burns (Houston),
Sophia Perkins (Sydney, Australia) and
Sabree Lefebvre (Riverview, Fla.) all posted rounds of 74 on Tuesday. Burns held onto 12th place in the tournament with 223 strokes (78-71-74/+7), while Perkins leapt up 19 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 19th place at 227 strokes (77-76-74/+11) and Lefebvre climbed 15 places to tie for 25th overall with her 229 strokes (84-71-74/+13).
Freshman
Manon Verret (Toulouse, France) ended in a tie for 14th place, up three spots from Monday, after collecting 75 strokes in the final 18 holes to finish with 225 (76-74-75/+9). Fellow freshman
Abbey Anderson (Austin, Texas) competed as an individual over the two days and saved her best round for last, carding a 75 to move up 13 spots into a tie for 42nd place (78-81-75=234/+18).
St. Mary's returns to the links on Feb. 2-3 at the Texas State Invitational in New Braunfels.
