FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. — The 13th-ranked St. Mary's University Men's Golf team finished sixth at the stacked field at the Golfweek Fripp Island to Bermuda Invitational, as all 15 teams in the field are either ranked or receiving votes in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches' Poll.
The Rattlers totaled 871 strokes over the three rounds (299-285-287/+7) to defeat four teams ranked ahead of them in the polls in No. 1 West Florida (9th, +15), No. 2 North Georgia (7th, +9), No. 11 Lincoln Memorial (11th, +22) and No. 12 USC Beaufort (12th, +25). No. 4 Lee won the tournament at -25, while No. 5 Georgia Southwestern was second (-7), No. 3 Florida Southern was third (-2) and No. 10 Columbus State placed fourth (E). Catawba, which is receiving votes in the poll, rounded out the top five (+3).
Drew Zielinski won individual medalist honors and will receive the PGA Tour exemption into the Bermuda Invitational next month after finishing with 207 strokes (65-76-66), helping Lee to the team title.
Senior
Kongpop Kaikaew (Rayong, Thailand) posted five birdies in the first eight holes of the day, ending with a round of 71 to tie for 10th place and move up four spots on the leaderboard at 215 (75-69-71/-1).
Junior Philip Hallström (Gävle, Sweden) bounded up 12 spots on the leaderboard with his final round of 70, tying for 14th overall, one stroke behind Kaikaew at 216 (72-74-70/E). It is the seventh time in Hallström's career that he's finished inside the top 15 at a tournament.
Senior
Baptiste Touchard (Saint-Agathon, France) also climbed the standings over the final round, matching Hallström with a 70 to vault nine spots into a tie for 29th at 219 (78-71-70/+3).
Sophomores
Guillaume Paquette (La Minerve, Quebec) and
Elijah Galvan (Austin, Texas) carded final rounds of 76 and 78, respectively. Paquette finished tied for 47th (78-71-76=225/+9), while Galvan tied for 56th (74-75-78=227/+11).
The Rattlers finished third in the field in both par-4 and par-5 scoring, averaging 4.13 strokes per hole on par-4s and 4.68 per hole on par-5s.
St. Mary's has one tournament remaining on the fall docket in the DBU Classic, which will take place Oct. 27-28 in Rockwall, Texas. It is the only time this fall that the Rattlers compete in their home state.
