SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The St. Mary's University STUNT team pulled off another pair of exciting wins to wrap up the regular season as they defeated Missouri Baptist 17-16 in double overtime before shutting out Southwest Baptist 14-0 in the finale of the Drury Tournament.
Â
The Rattlers (10-5) have now won five of their last six contests and await word from the national governing body on qualifying for the national tournament.
Â
In the day's first match, the Rattlers and Spartans needed two extra periods to decide a victor. The two teams were tied after the first, third, and fourth quarters, forcing the first overtime in school history. Overtime rules for STUNT are a fourth-quarter routine, beginning with the lowest that hadn't been already called, so the teams both performed number three. MBU won partner stunts, the Rattlers won jumps and tumbling and the teams tied pyramids and throws, which knotted the score at 14-14.
Â
In the second overtime, the two teams competed number four, tying the first two routines before the Rattlers won the final routine for the 17-16 victory.
Â
During the last competition against Southwest Baptist, the Rattlers dominated from the get-go, winning all three of the points awarded in each of the first three quarters for the 9-0 lead. The Rattlers won two points in routine one and three points in routine two of the fourth quarter for the 14-0 advantage and a mercy rule victory – also the first in school history.
