Ten from Men's Soccer Honored by Lone Star Conference

SAN ANTONIO — Posting a 12-3-3 record entering the Lone Star Conference Tournament, the St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team was extremely well represented on the postseason awards and All-Academic teams, the league announced at the championship banquet on Thursday on the St. Mary's campus.

Junior Luke Mulkey from Parker, Texas, who played every minute of the regular season, was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Mulkey has one goal on the year and has helped the Rattlers post nine shutouts from the center-back position. Mulkey is the third Rattler to earn the defensive award, joining Liam Morrison (2020) and Lewis Wilson (2022).

Fellow junior Johnny Thurbin from Lingfield, Surrey, England, earned the Goalkeeper of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches. Thurbin has been in goal for all 1620 minutes of the season, ranking 10th in the nation in goals against average (.667), third in shutouts (9) and 11th in save percentage (.818). He has already broken the St. Mary's single-season record with 12 wins.

Sofian Maghouz, a senior from London, England, was tabbed the league's Newcomer of the Year. The transfer from Western Illinois has nine points this season, leading the Rattlers with five assists and adding two goals, including the game-winner at Texas A&M International (Oct. 19).

The trio, along with senior defender Lewis Nohar (Cumnock, Scotland), were also named to the All-Conference First Team.

Junior midfielder Adam Aboohamidi (Wolfforth, Texas), senior defender Andrick Ferrer (Buffalo, N.Y.), sophomore forward Gael Gallegos (Laredo, Texas), and senior defender Pau Mateu-Deya (Marratxi, Balearic
Islands, Spain) were all honored on the All-Conference Second Team and senior midfielder Cooper Stephens (Richardson, Texas) was named to the Third Team.

Thurbin and senior defender Bradley Greene (Essex, England) were also named to the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team. The All-Academic Team, selected by vote of the LSC sports information directors, recognizes student-athlete accomplishments in the classroom and on the soccer pitch. To be eligible for the All-Academic Team ballot, individuals must maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility. This is the first award for either Rattler.

Midwestern State forward Mere Escobar claimed Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. Escobar, a senior from Austin, Texas, also received the LSC Midfielder of the Year Award. He led the conference with 36 points (14 goals and eight assists) – 16 more than anyone else. DBU senior Peyton Voelker was named LSC Forward of the Year, while Oklahoma Christian goalkeeper Pepe Hinterschuster took Freshman of the Year honors. St. Edward's Brian Young was named LSC Coach of the Year after guiding a third-place finish after the Hilltoppers finished last in 2023.

The Rattlers face DBU in the semifinals of the Lone Star Tournament on Friday at 5 p.m., while Midwestern State and St. Edward's square off in the second semifinal, slated for 7:30 p.m.
