Women's Soccer Completes Undefeated Exhibition Season

HOUSTON — On Sunday evening, the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team completed a perfect exhibition season, defeating Texas Southern 3-2 for a 3-0 exhibition record.

In the 32nd minute, senior forward Juni Ejere (Weatherford, Texas) kept things rolling with the first goal of the evening. She has now scored four goals in the last two contests.

The Tigers answered with two quick goals in the 34th and 35th minutes by Hajar Benjoud and the Rattlers entered the locker room at the break trailing 2-1.

In the 70th minute sophomore Sydney Varela (El Paso, Texas) evened the score, while in the 79th minute senior transfer Alexis Truitt (Boerne, Texas) nailed the game-winner.

The Rattlers were more aggressive than TSU in the second half, outshooting them 11-3 and junior goalkeeper Melida Garza (New Braunfels, Texas) notched three saves in the second period to help lift StMU to its third-straight victory in the preseason.

The win was the third-straight for the Rattlers and second-straight against a Division I opponent as they opened 2023 with a 2-1 win at Abilene Christian.

St. Mary's kicks off the regular season on Thursday against East Central at approximately 7:30 p.m. in a doubleheader with the men's team.
