ALPINE, Texas – Despite outshooting the hosts and being whistled for only three fouls, the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision on Wednesday afternoon at Sul Ross State.
Freshman
Helen Lazaro (Garland, Texas) scored both goals for the Rattlers (5-6-2, 3-5-1), finding the back of the net twice in the first half to bring her season total to 10 and within one of the school record for goals in a single season by a freshman of 11 held by Kaitie Kasperitis from 2011.
In the seventh minute, she drove over half the distance of the field, taking the ball down the near sideline into the box and tapping the ball with her right foot into the lower right corner of the net for the early 1-0 advantage.
The Lobos (1-7-3, 1-5-2) tied the score on a really long goal by Gabby Trevino in the 32nd minute, who also notched a brace in the contest.
Lazaro scored her second goal of the day in the 42nd minute, taking a feed from about two yards outside the box, worked her way around a defender and used her left foot to blast the ball into the lower left corner for the 2-1 lead.
SRS scored twice in the second half for the win.
St. Mary's collected 14 shots on the day, with eight on goal, while the Lobos had 13 shots and eight on goal.
The Rattlers return home to host Angelo State on Saturday at 7 p.m., welcoming former associate head coach Mike Erwin back as his first season as head coach of the Rambelles. ASU had a bye on Wednesday and enters the contest with a 2-7-3 record and a 1-5-2 mark in league action.
