SAN ANTONIO — With 12 seconds remaining, the West Texas A&M Women's Soccer team struck a dagger into the heart of St. Mary's University fans with a goal for the 4-3 victory on Wednesday night.
The Lady Buffs (2-5-3, 1-3-2) took a corner from the near side with under a minute left and the ball looked to be punched out after several attempts on the ball. However, Samantha Solorzano grabbed possession and shot it back into the right side of the net for the game-winning goal.
The Rattlers (5-4-2, 3-3-1) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring a pair in the first 11 minutes. Freshman
Helen Lazaro (Garland, Texas) took the pass on a free kick by
Emilee Durante (San Antonio) and worked past two defenders for the initial goal in the ninth minute. It is the eighth goal of the season for Lazaro.
Just over two minutes later, Durante received a cross from Lazaro and headed into the upper right quadrant of the net for the 2-0 advantage in the 11th minute for her second collegiate goal.
The Lady Buffs scored on a ball that went off the crossbar and took a lucky bounce into the net off a shot by Riley Sims in the 13th minute, and they tied the game in the 30th minute on a goal by Braely Martinez.
Twenty-three seconds into the second half, freshman
