LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday its 2023 Tucci/NFCA Division II Player and Pitcher of the Year watchlist and St. Mary's senior pitcher
Catalina Cavazos is one of 115 student-athletes on the list.
New in 2023, the list is broken down into the eight NCAA Regions (Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West) with up to 15 student-athletes represented in each region. The list is compiled and the award is voted on by the elected members of the NFCA Division II All-American Committee with one head coach representing each of the eight NCAA regions. To be eligible, a student-athlete's head coach must be a member.
Cavazos, a senior right-hander from Houston currently ranks in the top 50 in the nation in complete games (12), saves (3), shutouts (4), strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.5), victories (10), WHIP (0.98) and walks allowed per seven innings (1.05). She is 10-5 overall with a 1.65 ERA and has four shutouts with three saves. She has only 16 walks with 88 strikeouts through 107 innings of work.
Thirteen of the 15 student-athletes in the South Central region on the watchlist are from the talented Lone Star Conference and Cavazos is one of five pitchers on the regional list.
