Softball Faces Tough Test with #11 Lubbock Christian

First Pitch

•    St. Mary's heads west to Lubbock for a three-game series at No. 11 Lubbock Christian. The Lady Chaps are coming off a 2-1 series at Texas A&M Kingsville and are 21-8 on the year. The series features two of the top pitching staffs in the nation as both teams rank in the top 10 in total shutouts. LCU has 10, while the Rattlers have seven.

•    The Rattlers are outscoring opponents 50-13 in the fifth and sixth innings in 2023, accounting for 40 percent of the team's scoring in those two frames.

•    Both junior Reba Reyes and freshman Raegan Tennill are already tied for seventh in St. Mary's single season history with four sacrifice flies and are one off the school record of five done six times by five players (Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone did it in both 2012 & 2015). The duo are tied for the lead in the LSC and third in the national statistics.

•    For the second time this year, junior Lauren Gonzales tied the school record with three stolen bases. She is the 10th player in school history to swipe three bags in a single game and it's the 14th time it's been done after she did it against Western New Mexico on March 4 and against Texas A&M International on March 11. Gonzales leads the team with 20 steals, which is third in the Lone Star.

•    StMU hitters are willing to do whatever it takes to score a run, as the Rattlers lead the nation with 19 sacrifice flies and eighth in the nation in sacrifice bunts with 28.

•    Junior Mackenzie Dugi has reached base safely in the last five games and in 26 of the 28 this season. In the opener at St. Edward's Dugi reached via an error, which doesn't count towards the streak.

•    The three pitchers on the staff with five or more starts have a combined ERA of 1.23 this season. Individually, senior Catalina Cavazos is 2nd in the Lone Star at 1.21, while sophomore Madeline Bloom is third at 1.30. Jadyn Abrego doesn't meet the minimums to appear, but she would be second. The entire staff has an ERA of 1.63, which is 2nd in the Lone Star (and only 0.01 behind West Texas A&M) and 16th in Division II.

•    Once again, the Rattlers are one of the nation's leaders in double plays. The team leads the Lone Star Conference and ranks fifth nationally with 13 double plays. The Rattlers have finished in the top 25 in the nation each of the last three years, ranking 22nd with 21 in 2022, leading the nation with 24 in 2021 and finishing second with 13 in the shortened year of 2020.

•    St. Mary's is currently fourth in the Lone Star Conference standings at 10-5. Lubbock Christian is fifth at 11-7.
