LOUISVILLE, Ky. – St. Mary's senior pitcher
Catalina Cavazos has earned the initial Wilson/NFCA DII Player of the Week honor for 2023.
The Houston native started the season 3-0 with a miniscule 0.33 ERA, finishing the weekend with a no-hitter against #8 Central Oklahoma. Cavazos struck out 18 batters in 21.0 innings of work at the DII Spring Invitational Kickoff and walked only one. Opponents hit just .167 against her as she posted victories over Cal Poly Humboldt, Arkansas Tech and the Bronchos.
Cavazos becomes the seventh NFCA National Player of the Week in St. Mary's history and the first since 2018. She joins Kym Kling (4/23/03 and 3/24/04), Viianna Gutierrez Touchtone (3/25/15), Hannah Michel (2/18/16), Sydney Wellmann (3/16/16) and Staci Johns (3/21/18) on the elite list.
Her no-hitter was the 30th solo one recorded in Rattlers history and she is the 13th different pitcher to do so in the storied program's annals.
