Men's Tennis Defeats Pair of Colorado Teams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. – The St. Mary's Men's Tennis Team won its first two duals of the 2022-23 season on Friday at the Pueblo Duals, defeating Colorado Mesa 6-1 and Colorado College 5-2.

"It was a tough mental adjustment to playing in the higher altitude," said Director of Tennis Bill Macom. "It definitely wasn't our best tennis today, collectively, but we were able to close things out. We were able to see some doubles combinations and are predicting that our best tennis will happen tomorrow."

The Rattlers close out the tournament on Saturday at MSU Denver at Noon. The Roadrunners defeated UT Permian Basin (5-2) and Lubbock Christian (4-3) on Friday.

COLORADO MESA RECAP (6-1)
The Rattlers jumped out early, winning two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day. Junior Ryan Koth (Boerne, Texas) and sophomore Rafael Macedo (Brazil) joined forces to win 6-4 at No. 2, while junior Nicolas Llosa (Lima, Peru) and senior Sebastian Azcui (La Paz, Bolivia) pulled off the tiebreak win, 7-2.

StMU won in straight sets at 1, 3, 4 and 5, while Azcui fought back after dropping the first-set tiebreaker, 7-5 to win 6-2 in the second and 10-4 in the third using the internationals doubles scoring.

Junior Oskar Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia) played his first match at No. 1 singles for the Rattlers after playing predominantly at the four and five ladder positions a season ago. Irdoja won 6-4, 6-4.

COLORADO COLLEGE RECAP (5-2)
The number one and three doubles duos won to get the Rattlers started off on the right foot. Junior Jake Faryniarz (San Antonio) paired with Ordoja at #1 for the 6-4 win, while Azcui and Mario Urdaneta (Houston) won 6-3 at #3.

Irdoja lost the first set in a tiebreaker, but won the next two sets at #1. Koth got a late break of serve in the first set at No. 3 and then rolled in the second set, winning 6-0. Sophomore Alvaro Soler (Alicante, Spain) dropped only four games at #4, while Faryniarz won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 for the 5-2 victory.
