SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's University Director of Tennis
Bill Macom has announced the captains for the Men's and Women's Tennis teams ahead of the upcoming 2026-2027 season.
Macom has named junior
Lucas Castillo Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) the captain of the Men's team, while seniors
Madalyn Smelley (Ocean Springs, Miss.) and
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) will serve as co-captains of the Women's team.
"It's been a few years since we have had any players earn the distinction of being named captain," Macom said. "After several in-depth conversations, we feel that these three are capable of helping lead their respective teams on the correct path to nationals."
Castillo Sanchez is coming off a strong summer that saw him reach the round of 16 at the 2026 ITA Summer Championship. He ended the 2026 StMU season ranked 15th in the South Central region after posting a 14-5 record.
"It's a big honor to be named captain of the team," Castillo Sanchez said "I'm very grateful for the opportunity and responsibility that comes with this role. I know we have some big goals for the upcoming season, and I'm excited to see what we can accomplish together."
Smelley sat out the spring season after suffering an injury during the fall. She was named to the 2025 Lone Star Conference All-Tournament team after leading DBU to the title before the program was cut. She was 4-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles during the fall tournament season before her injury.
"A quote that has always meant a lot to me is my favorite bible verse, 2 Corinthians 12:9: 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness,'" said Smelley. "It reminds me that strength can come from the moments that challenge us most. As a captain, I want to carry that with me and be someone my teammates can always lean on, especially during difficult times."
Wu enters her final season with the Rattlers ranked ninth all-time in singles victories with 45 and 10th on the combined singles and doubles dual victories list with 86. She was ranked 57th in the nation in the ITA Final ranking of the spring, was named to the Lone Star All-Conference Second Team in singles and was voted to the LSC All-Sportsmanship team.
"I'm truly honored to be named a captain along with Mady this season," Wu said. "It means a lot to know that my teammates and coaches trust me to help lead our team and I'm grateful for the opportunity. Being a captain is much more than having a title, it's about setting a positive example through hard work, accountability, and supporting those around you every day. We have an incredible group of teammates who are dedicated to getting better and pushing each other to be our best. I'm excited to help create a positive team culture, encourage everyone to keep working toward our goals, and proudly represent our program. I'm excited to see what we achieve together this season. The fall season gets underway for the men at the Trinity Invitational and for the women at the Kimbell Memorial Invitational on Sept. 18.
