SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's Director of Tennis
Bill Macom announces the addition of six tennis players to the men's and women's tennis rosters for the 2022-23 season.
Â
The men's team, which was young in 2021-22, adds the signing of
Bernhard Hauer, while the women's team expands with five new student-athletes.
Â
Hauer is a freshman from Vienna, Austria where he recently graduated from the International Business College Hetzendorf, doing so in the top five of his class. In the 2021 championship season, Hauer went undefeated in singles action and won 80% of his doubles matches.
Â
"Bernhard is going to be a hard worker and will have the opportunity to become an impact player for us," Macom stated. "We lost a few starting players but return a very deep roster and I'm looking forward to his competitive nature."
Â
The women add
Kyndall Quiroz,
Vanessa Rodriguez,
Katie Sergeeva,
Stela Sifuentes and
Alessia Terlizzi after the graduation of standouts
Maria Garcia,
Alice Thane and
Marina Vigil.
Â
Quiroz is a San Antonio native who is returning to the Alamo City after spending two seasons at Midwestern State. In 2022, she was 2-2 in Lone Star Conference action and was 7-1 during her freshman campaign. She was a four-year letterwinner at Reagan HS.
Â
"Kyndall was a tough opponent for us for the past two years," said Macom. "I really like her on court energy and think her game can really blossom the next two years at StMU."
Â
Rodriguez joins the Rattlers from United High School in Laredo, where she helped them reach the semifinals of the regional championship. In doubles play, she was 30-2 and graduated with honors.
Â
"Vanessa has some good high school team tennis experience," Macom continued. "I am hoping that she makes a solid transition into college tennis and adds more depth to our lineup."
Â
Sergeeva is an incoming freshman from Viborg, Russia, who has spent time in San Antonio during juniors. She won second place at the Spring Tennis Federation Cup in Saint Petersburg in singles and the doubles title at the Leningrad Region Championship.Â
Â
Her coach Vladimir Lamanen said of Katie: "She is easy to work with and is determined to win every game. Very focused to reach and return any ball regardless of how difficult it might be. I had a great pleasure being her trainer and watching her progress as a tennis player. Amazing results and dedication."
Â
"Katie did some junior tennis training in San Antonio over the years and I anticipate that she will fit in quite well with our routines," stated Macom. "She has good technical skills and her game should improve rapidly once we start match play."
Â
Sifuentes is a four-year honor roll student from Lake Travis HS and comes from a very athletic family as her parents both played tennis in college and three of her cousins played Division I baseball. She was a state semifinalist in doubles in 2019 and helped her team reach the 6A state semfinals in both 2018 and 2019.Â
Â
"Stela has the skills to play an aggressive all court game style," Macom said. "I've had the opportunity to see her play multiple times over the last year and she has a pretty good court sense in doubles, which I like a lot."
Â
A freshman from Italy, Terlizzi joins the Rattlers from the Linguistic High School Rovato in Andria. In addition to tournaments in Italy, Terlizzi has played in other countries such as Norway, Denmark, Malta, Austria and Greece.
Â
"Alessia has had some quality junior tennis results," commented Macom. "I've been impressed with her competitive mentality and I hope that pushes her new teammates in practice every day."
Â
All six new Rattlers are looking forward to competing in the 2022-23 season and will begin classes on August 16.
