Johns and Cavazos Honored by NFCA

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In a vote by the softball coaches in the region, St. Mary's senior second baseman Jayme Johns and junior pitcher Catalina Cavazos were both honored on the South Central All-Region NFCA teams it was announced Wednesday.
 
Johns, from Elgin, Texas, earned First-Team honors, while Houston native Cavazos was named to the Second Team. Johns and Cavazos are the first Rattler selections to the team since 2019 when Jayme's older sister Staci earned Second-Team All-Region honors.
 
Jayme Johns leads the Rattlers with a .403 batting average, which ranks eighth in the Lone Star Conference statistics. She is also tied for third in the league with 64 hits and tied for fourth with seven sacrifice bunts. Johns reached base in 29 of the team's first 30 games and is hitting .449 with runners on base. She also has a team-best 17 two-out RBIs and her name will now be forwarded to the ballot for the All-America team.
 
Cavazos is 19-4 in the circle with a 2.06 ERA. She ranks third in the Lone Star Conference with 14 complete games and her 19 victories are tied for second-most in the talented league. She has struck out 116 batters this season, with 35 looking and has 3.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in her first season with the Rattlers.
 
St. Mary's begins play at the NCAA South Central Regional on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Texas A&M Commerce. The entire South Central All-Region team appears on page six of the attached document.
