ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – "Success isn't always about greatness. It's about consistency, as consistent hard work leads to success, greatness will come," Dwayne Johnson said.
The St. Mary's Women's Golf team was extremely consistent over the two days at the Nick Turner Invitational at the Arroyo del Oso Golf Course in Albuquerque and it paid off with the Rattlers' first team title of the 2022-23 season.
In the opening round, the Rattlers shot a 298 and followed it up with a 297 on Tuesday to win the title by three strokes over Cal State San Marcos. StMU sat in a tie for second place after day one, making up the five-stroke difference and gaining three for the victory.
Seniors Estelle Beck (Lakeway, Texas) and Jordyn Wray (San Antonio), along with sophomore Libby Kilbride (Sheffield, England) all shot identical rounds to Monday, with Beck tallying 73 to tie for third at 146, Wray carding 74 to tie for ninth at 148 and Kilbride collecting a 75 to tie for 13th at 150.
Senior Rebecca Reed (Midland, Texas) shaved one stroke off her Monday score for a 75 on day two and a 151 for the tournament, tying for 17th place. Junior Maria Ferrer (Queretaro, Queretaro, Mexico) shot an 81 on day two, finishing at 160 and in a tie for 50th.
The title is the first for the Rattlers since May 3-5, 2021 when they won the NCAA West Regional. Caroline Wales (Cal State San Marcos) and Sydney Williams (UAFS) tied for individual medalist honors at 145, one stroke ahead of Beck.Â
Kilbride ranked second in the field with six birdies in the tournament, while Reed was second with 27 pars. Beck collected 25 pars and Wray had 24, both ending on the leader board.
The tournament is the final one of the fall season for the Rattlers.
