St. Mary’s Esports Celebrates International Women’s Day

SAN ANTONIO - "Empowered Women, Empower Women". March 8th serves as International Women's Day and the month of March serves as Women's History Month.

What does this mean to St. Mary's Esports?
For St. Mary's Esports, this is a time where we can celebrate and highlight the women in our program who illuminate the collegiate esports space, a space which has been traditionally male dominated. We believe representation and visibility is important as it can inspire the next generation of students to get involved in esports.

How will St. Mary's Esports highlight women in esports?
During the month of March, we will use our social media accounts as platforms to amplify the voices and accomplishments of our players and student staff. Expect additional social media posts on Instagram and Twitter highlighting individuals and our broadcasts to feature more pre- and post-game interviews with our players.
Schedule of Events & Broadcasts
  • March 20th at 2PM CST - Overwatch Collegiate Championship (OWCC), Week 5, with shoutcasting from Teresa Lee and Coach Carolina Fabela.
  • March 21st at 1:30PM CST - Collegiate Starleague (CSL) Fortnite Tournament

Brief Interviews with our Players & Student Staff

Sonora Mata
Major: Computer Science

Q: How did you become interested in esports?
A: "Through StMU, I was given the opportunity to be on the varsity Overwatch team and to shoutcast for other various esports productions, which is how I found my love for shoutcasting."

Q: What is something not everyone knows about you?
A: "Along with my love for video games, I've always loved fine arts. Acting, singing, dancing are ways that I express myself. I've been singing in school choirs for 7 years and I currently take opera courses here at St. Mary's."

Chloe Martinez

Q: What is something we might be surprised to learn about you?
A: "I am a certified phlebotomy technician and pharmacist technician."

Q: Do you have any advice for someone wanting to get better at League of Legends?
A: "It takes time to get better at anything. Just keep practicing, watch tutorial videos on how to play the game, watch professional streamers, ask for help, and review your games!"

Q: Can you tell us a joke?
A: "What is the blood's message to the world? B positive."

Victoria "Torie" Martinez
Major: Forensic Science
Esports: Fortnite

Q: What is a dream job of yours, now or as a child?
A: "Since I was 10 years old, I told my parents I wanted to do Forensic Science and here I am 10 years later with only one more year till I obtain a degree that I knew I wanted since I was a kid. I plan to take that degree and work towards my dream job of a Blood Spatter Analyst."

Q: Who has been your biggest supporter in life?
A: "My biggest supporter is my brother Marcus; he has always been there in my corner rooting for me and coaching me on what to do. He was the one that encouraged me in high school to get good grades so I can go to any college I want, and he was there again when I was trying to figure out how college works. When I was thinking about trying out for the Esports team, I asked him "do you think I should do it" and his words to me were "why shouldn't you do it, if you don't do it, you will lose your chance and regret it, just do it." Without my brother I wouldn't have that light that guides me, and I wouldn't have the courage to try anything new."

Q: Can you tell us a joke?
A: "It takes guts to be a forensic scientist... A lot of guts. Everywhere."

Q: How did you become interested in gaming and/or esports?
A: For as long as I can remember I have always had an interest in gaming, but it was not until about a year or two ago that I became interested in competitive gaming and the esports world.

Q: What is something not everyone knows about you?
A: "Prior to esports and transferring to St. Mary's, I was on scholarship to play basketball at Clarendon College (Clarendon, TX), which I played competitively for about 15 years, along with many other sports ranging from flag football to baseball to softball to even track & field. I am also ambidextrous."

Q: Do you have any advice for someone wanting to get better at Fortnite?
A: "Really just believe in yourself and your ability. I wasn't too sure I would make the Fortnite team after the Fall tryouts but here, I am, as not just a player but also a team captain.
