Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's University split their home and conference opener on Friday night as they defeated No. 19 Texas A&M Kingsville 2-1 in the opener before falling to the Javelinas, 7-2 in the nightcap.
Game One
Trailing by one after Texas A&M Kingsville plated a run in the top of the third,
Jayme Johns with one swing of the bat, evened the game one run a piece as the sophomore blasted a ball over the right field wall for the first homerun of her career. With two outs in the inning,
Abigale Carney and
Bari Christian drew back-to-back walks to put runners at first and second.
Amber Gonzales waited back on an off-speed pitch from the Javelina hurler and sent it back up the middle, scoring Carney to put the Rattlers ahead 2-1.
Texas A&M Kingsville got their leadoff batter aboard in the top of the sixth. After a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base, the Javelinas had a runner at third with one out. St. Mary's pitcher,
Alex McLennan induced a flyout and a groundout to escape the jam, keeping the Rattlers in front, 2-1.
McLennan picked up her fifth win of the season and her first complete game of her junior campaign.
Gonzales finished the game 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI.
Game Two
Both teams traded homeruns in the second inning, the first coming for the Javelinas to take a one-run lead. In the home half of the inning, Gonzales evened things up as she lifted a ball to left field that ricocheted off the left fielder's glove and fell over the wall for Gonzales third homerun of the year and fourth of her career.
In the top half of the third, the Javelinas manufactured a run and managed to get two in the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage into the fifth inning. Texas A&M Kingsville continued to put runs on the board in the fifth as they plated two, forcing St. Mary's to go to
Julia Cruz out of the bullpen. Cruz fanned the only hitter she faced in the inning to end the Javelina threat.
St. Mary's got a run back in the fifth as
Jayme Johns and
Victoria Aldridge both reached on two-out singles. Johns was driven in by
Alex Moreno who singled to left field to make it a 6-2 game.
Texas A&M Kingsville added another in the sixth frame to take a 7-2 lead, that eventually went final.
Jayme Johns tallied her ninth multi-hit game, fifth three-hit game and extended her hitting streak to 18 straight on the season.
Gonzales picked up two hits in the loss.
