Nash, Ortiz thrive as Rattlers split pair with Pioneers

DENTON, Texas — Virtually automatic at the plate, Raynelle Nash and Alessandra Ortiz helped lead St. Mary's to a split against the Texas Woman's on Wednesday at Pioneer Field.
 
After falling 2-0 in a closely contested opening game, the Rattlers bounced back with a convincing 8-0 victory.
 
Led by Nash, who went 3-for-4 in the nightcap for three runs and an RBI, and Ortiz, who posted a pair of hits, the Rattlers combined for 12 hits against the Pioneers.
 
Following an RBI single up the middle by Nash in the first, Abigale Carney deposited a two-RBI double to left center.
 
Carney would cap her day with an RBI double in the seventh before Marcela Vasquez punctuated the victory with a two-run blast to left as St. Mary's improved to 21-8 this season.
 
Hope Russell picked up the victory as she and Alex McLennan combined for the three-hit shutout. Russell struck out four in three in four innings of work while McLennan was almost perfect in three full innings, allowing only one baserunner on a walk.
 
Despite the loss in Game 1, Staci Johns impressed in the circle as she went the distance allowing only three hits while striking out four in six innings pitched.
 
Nash and Ortiz each went 2-for-3 at the plate with Vasquez accounting for the only other Rattler hit.
 
The Rattlers will resume conference play on Friday against Rogers State beginning at 3 p.m. in a battle of between the top two teams in the Heartland Conference.
