Men's Tennis falls to SW Baptist in NCAA Round of 16

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Florida — A historic St. Mary's Men's Tennis season came to a sudden end Tuesday afternoon — but not before witnessing that classic Rattler fight. 

No. 23 Southwest Baptist edged No. 20 StMU 5-3 in the NCAA Division II national championship Round of 16 at Sanlando Park, rallying from an early 2-1 deficit with four points in singles. 

St. Mary's (18-7) played its classically strong doubles game, as Adam Dockery and Jeremiah Gonzalez won at No. 1, 8-2, to set a strong tone to start the match. Jose Antelo and Michael Maciel followed with an 8-4 victory at No. 2, as the Rattlers struck to take a 2-1 lead into the break entering singles. 

The momentum carried over into singles, where four Rattlers won their first sets, including Gonzalez, Antelo, Dockery and Joseph. 

But Southwest Baptist countered by winning at No. 1 and 6, while St. Mary's Gonzalez won at No. to even the overall score at 3-3. 

It turned all eyes to Courts 3, 4 and 5 as the teams battled a toward a classic finish in a hard-fought match.

Southwest Baptist ultimately claimed victory at Courts 4 and 5 to win the match, with Alex Joseph leading at Court 5, 6-3, 4-6, 5-4 when the match was called. 

St. Mary's finishes the most successful season in the program's history with the following milestones: highest national ranking, first-ever trip to nationals, first South Central Regional victory, first Heartland Conference Tournament championship, and first time winning back-to-back Heartland titles.
