WICHITA FALLS, Texas – In a late addition to the fall schedule, the St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team traveled to compete in the Midwestern State Invitational over the weekend and had five of the eight competitors win at least once in singles.
Sophomore
Nikita Gavrilonoks (Riga, Latvia) reached the finals of the Green Fligh, losing in a third-set tiebreaker to Cesar Loeches Llamas from Midwestern State after defeating both Tomas Leguizamon Chaves (MSU) and Washburn's Benjamin Fock in straight sets in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
Junior
Lincoln Baldonado (Glendale, Ariz.) also went 2-1, doing so in the Purple Flight. Baldonado dropped his first match in a third-set breaker to Martin Salvador Pages from MSU before winning his next two matches in straight sets, including winning thrilling tiebreakers in one set of each match. He knocked off Kenneth Latimer from MSU 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) and ended the weekend with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win over Lennard Goessel from Cameron.
Senior
Leonardo Fabbri (Faenza, Italy), junior
Florian Smalto (Paris, France) and freshman
Prateek Singla (Kyle, Texas) all went 1-2 in their respective singles flights.
In doubles play, the duo of
Victor Velter (Perpignan, France) and Gavrilonoks went 1-2 in the blue flight, while Fabbri played with both sophomore
Ollie Eriksson (Austin, Texas) and Singla to finish 1-2 in the blue flight.
The Rattlers host the rescheduled Brother Al Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Rohrbach Tennis Stadium. It was postponed to Oct. 16-17 due to rain in late September.
